About

What venous lakes are

A venous lake is a small, widened vein that forms a soft, dark blue or purple bump. They're most common on the lower lip, ears, face and neck, and they tend to appear in adults over 50, especially after years of sun exposure. When you press on one, it usually flattens or fades.

Venous lakes are harmless, but many people don't like how they look, and those on the lip can bleed if they're bitten. The Nd:YAG laser on our Cutera xeo is well suited to deeper blue vessels like these.

A dark spot on the lip that is hard, growing, bleeding or doesn't flatten when pressed should be checked by your doctor first.

What to expect

Your treatment, step by step

  1. Free consultation

We look at the veins or spots, review your health history, medications and recent sun exposure, and tell you how many sessions to expect and what it will cost.

  2. Treatment

You'll wear protective eyewear while the laser is pulsed over each bump. Most people say it feels like an elastic band snapping against the skin.

  3. Right after

Some swelling is normal, especially on the lips, and usually settles within a day or two.

  4. Results

The bump shrinks and fades over the following weeks.

  5. Follow up

Many venous lakes clear in one or two sessions.

Nurse-led care on the Cutera xeo

Your laser treatment is done by Melissa Gagnon, RPN, founder of Canadian Beauty Boutique, who brings more than 15 years of experience in medical aesthetics. Melissa does your consultation and your treatment herself.

All of our laser and light treatments are done on the Cutera xeo, a medical platform that combines a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser with intense pulsed light (IPL) handpieces, including Limelight and ProWave LX, in one system. That lets us tailor every treatment to your skin and concern, and combine treatments in the same visit. The Nd:YAG laser can be used on all skin types, Fitzpatrick I to VI, and its built in cooling helps keep you comfortable.
