About
Why facial veins appear
Facial spider veins, also called broken capillaries or telangiectasia, are tiny widened blood vessels close to the surface of the skin. They often show up around the nostrils, on the nose and cheeks, and on the chin.
Sun damage is one of the most common causes, along with thinner skin as we age, genetics and rosacea. An injury, or scrubbing your face too hard, can also leave small veins visible.
The 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser on our Cutera xeo targets the blood inside each vein so it closes and fades, while the skin around it stays intact. If your concern is overall redness or flushing, see our facial redness page.
What to expect
Your treatment, step by step
Free consultation
We look at the veins or spots, review your health history, medications and recent sun exposure, and tell you how many sessions to expect and what it will cost.
Treatment
You'll wear protective eyewear while the laser is pulsed over each vein. Most people say it feels like an elastic band snapping against the skin.
Right after
Mild redness or swelling usually settles within a day. Some veins look darker for a short time before they fade.
Results
Treated veins fade over about two to six weeks.
Follow up
Small veins often clear in one or two sessions. Larger or more numerous veins may need more.
Before and aftercare

- Tell us if you're pregnant. We don't offer laser treatments during pregnancy.
Aftercare
- Expect some redness or mild swelling for about a day.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, hot tubs and strenuous exercise for 48 hours.
- Don't rub or scrub the treated area.
- Wear sunscreen every day and avoid tanning while you heal.

Who you'll see and what we use
Nurse-led care on the Cutera xeo
Your laser treatment is done by Melissa Gagnon, RPN, founder of Canadian Beauty Boutique, who brings more than 15 years of experience in medical aesthetics. Melissa does your consultation and your treatment herself.
All of our laser and light treatments are done on the Cutera xeo, a medical platform that combines a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser with intense pulsed light (IPL) handpieces, including Limelight and ProWave LX, in one system. That lets us tailor every treatment to your skin and concern, and combine treatments in the same visit. The Nd:YAG laser can be used on all skin types, Fitzpatrick I to VI, and its built in cooling helps keep you comfortable.
