What is SkinVive?

A skin quality injectable, not a volume filler

SkinVive by Juvéderm is made by Allergan Aesthetics, the company behind Botox Cosmetic and the Juvéderm filler collection. It's a smooth hyaluronic acid gel with lidocaine, a numbing medicine, mixed in for comfort.

Instead of adding volume, SkinVive is placed as tiny microdroplets just under the surface of the skin. Hyaluronic acid holds water, so skin looks smoother, more hydrated and more even, and fine lines look softer. Your features and the shape of your face stay the same.

In 2023, Health Canada approved SkinVive for the face, including the cheeks and forehead, and the neck, to smooth fine lines and improve hydration.

Who it's for

What SkinVive helps with

Most often we treat the cheeks. The forehead and neck can be treated too.

Choosing a treatment

SkinVive, dermal filler or microneedling?

Many clients combine them. We'll recommend what fits your skin and goals at your consultation.

SkinVive

  • Smoother, more hydrated looking skin
  • Tiny droplets just under the surface
  • Doesn't change the shape of your face

Dermal filler

  • Restores volume and shape
  • Lips, cheeks, chin, jawline and under the eyes
  • Results you can see right away

SkinPen microneedling

  • Builds collagen over a series
  • Acne scars, pores and texture
  • No injections

What to expect

Your treatment, step by step

  1. Consultation

Meet with our team and our Medical Director, Susie Jezerinac, NP. We review your health history and plan your treatment.

  2. Numbing

We cleanse your skin. SkinVive already contains lidocaine, and we can apply numbing cream first if you'd like.

  3. Microdroplet injections

Melissa places tiny droplets of SkinVive across each area with a fine needle. The treatment itself takes about 30 minutes.

  4. Right after

Small bumps at the injection points, redness and swelling are normal. They usually settle within a few days to a week.

  5. Touch up and results

We may suggest a small touch up about a month later. In Allergan's studies, smoother texture lasted up to six months and hydration up to nine months after one treatment. Results vary, and repeat treatments keep them going.

Before and aftercare

Before and after your treatment

Before

  • Tell us about any allergies. SkinVive isn't right for you if you've had severe allergies or anaphylaxis, are allergic to lidocaine, or have reacted to a hyaluronic acid filler before.
  • If your doctor agrees, pause supplements and medications that can increase bruising, like fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin and ibuprofen, for a few days before. Don't stop any prescribed medication without talking to your doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment, since it can make bruising more likely.
  • Reschedule if you have pimples, a rash, a cold sore or any infection in the area. We treat once your skin is clear.
  • Tell us if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a history of keloid scars or pigmentation problems. We don't offer SkinVive during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Tell us about any laser treatments or chemical peels you have planned, so we can space them safely.
  • Book at least two weeks before a special event, so any small bumps or bruising have time to settle.

Aftercare

  • Small bumps at the injection points, redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising are common. Most of it settles within a few days to a week.
  • For 24 hours, skip strenuous exercise, extensive sun and heat like saunas and hot tubs, and alcohol. They can make redness and swelling worse.
  • Wait until the next day to wear makeup, and keep your skincare gentle for a day or two.
  • Don't rub, massage or press on the treated area unless we've asked you to.
  • A cool compress, wrapped in a clean cloth, can help with swelling.
  • Wait two weeks before lasers, peels or microneedling on the area, unless we've planned it differently with you.
  • Get medical care right away if you notice changes in your vision, unusual pain, skin that looks white or dusky, or signs of a stroke. These complications are rare but serious.

Results vary from person to person. If anything concerns you after your treatment, contact us.

Is SkinVive a filler?

It's made from hyaluronic acid like Juvéderm fillers, but it isn't used to add volume. It's spread in tiny droplets just under the surface to improve how your skin looks and feels, so the shape of your face doesn't change.

Is SkinVive approved in Canada?

Yes. Health Canada approved SkinVive by Juvéderm in 2023 for the face, including the cheeks and forehead, and the neck, to smooth fine lines and improve hydration.

How long does SkinVive last?

In Allergan's studies, hydration improvements lasted up to nine months and smoother texture up to six months after one treatment. Results vary, and repeat treatments are needed to keep them.

Does SkinVive hurt?

SkinVive contains lidocaine, a numbing medicine, and we can apply numbing cream first. Most people feel quick pinches as the droplets are placed.

What's the downtime?

Who shouldn't have SkinVive?

It isn't right for you if you've had severe allergies or anaphylaxis, are allergic to lidocaine or have reacted to a hyaluronic acid filler before. We also wait if you have a rash, pimples or an infection in the area, and we don't treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Can I combine SkinVive with Botox or filler?

Yes. SkinVive is often planned alongside wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers. We'll plan the order and timing at your consultation.
